MP3 download via bluetooth?
Am I able to download from computer to phone via bluetooth, or can it only be done via data cable?

My guess is no because the MP3s need to go to a specific folder on you SD mini disc. The only way to access that folder is through the application from your card reader. You may very well be able to transfer MP3s to your phone via BT but just not to the correct folder it would probably end up in your MY SOUNDS folder instead.

mp3 transfer is excruciatingly slow via bluetooth, only do it if you have no other option, or only want to do one at a time.

Ummmmm if thats what they (VZW) wanted to be enabled then they would have enabled it. So YES it is a hack, a circumvention, a go around, whatever you call it. Put it this way I bet you would do that to your in the presence of a customer service rep or a tech in the store.
