You can only play the MP3 player with them,they also can be used to view missed calls,text mesages,and when using a bluetooth headset.

You were always able to use them to view text messages and missed calls. When you have a message or a missed call you will see options on the front screeen above their corresponding buttoms. For text it's the middle button and it says view and then you use the side volume buttons to scroll up and down in the message. It's pretty obvious you'll get it.
