I went to the Wall St. store in NYC to have my phone updated. After waiting there for 1 1/2 hours they told me that my phone would need to be replaced since it would not take the update. I asked them to make sure that they transfered all my contacts and photos to the new phone. I then heard the worst possible answer.... contacts and photos?" I was told that my phone crashed during the update and everything was wiped out. Yup thats right - nada-nothing-zero. I am waiting to hear back from a district manager on what kind of compensation they are going to offer me. I would make sure that they back up all your phones info before getting the update. With that said - the update fixed the missing mp3 player, i think the volume is better a...

Just so you know. You are ALWAYS going to lose your pix and flix when u get this update. Your contacts do stay on the phone USUALLY. The first time I went in for service on mine and they said that I was hoing to lose all my pix I transferred all of the pix and flix to a floor model 8000. (this is when I owned the 8000)

Yea last time I was in the store to exchange my phone, there was a person with a different type of phone getting a software update. The tech advised that he read this sign that basically stated you could lose some or all of your data. So backing up is definitely a good idea. I have my stuff saved in bitpim and used to VZW backup assistant, which is 1.99/month (but I haven't renewed that since I got the new phone).

Backup Assistant is a Get It Now application that will back up your Mobile phone's address book. If your phone is lost, stolen or damaged, Backup Assistant will restore your mobile phone's contacts!*

its possible that during some s/w upgrades, something goes wrong and crashes the phone. during s/w up. all the data is taken out of the phone, the new s/w gets put in, and then your orig data goes back to the phone, if the s/w up. stoped after all the info was taken out of the phone during the process than the phone is pretty much useless. it won't have serial number and especially your contacts. thats why back up assistant is great. it backs up your phone book over the vzw system. so if you lose the phone, all you have to do is to down load back up assnt. on new phone and all your contacts will be transfered back into your phone. and i can't believe you would contact a destrict manager over something so stupid. get over it and start over.

Listen jackass. I didnt complain to the district manager. The store manager felt bad for me and escalated the issue to the district manager. I had over 300 numbers on the phone abd most of them I dont have saved anywhere else. Maybe you dont have any friends so you dont have any numbers saved. I posted a warning since I didnt want this to happen to anybody else. Sorry for trying to help out.

wwhizard - I had the update done today. I didn't notice until I got home, but now I don't get the EV signal indicator. I can't get VCast. Also, I can't even dial *228. When they did my update, it took no more than 30 minutes. I did not lose any data - pics, ringtones, etc. I did check and my phone now says version 4 in the software, and the My MP3 folder is there. Any ideas??

Your phone should still have EV-DO indicator.

Have you tried a *22899? I was told that this goes directly to the switch for data features.

Just had my software updated. I lost nothing. All my pix and flix were still there. If you have this done by a tech/rep who knows what they're doing, you shouldn't lose content too often (but it is still possible). This is the second phone I've had updated in the last year. I have yet to have a phone fried or content lost. You may have gotten a rookie Tech, or maybe one of the customer svc reps who aren't really that familiar with the process.

Regardless, I would still HIGHLY recommend backing up your data ANYTIME you have something done to your phone.
