Here's what the Verizon GetIM site says...

Application Description:

Stay logged into your IM account as long as you like with no airtime charges. Incoming and outgoing Instant Messages, and any functions that you perform (for example, adding a new contact) will be billed as a TXT Message under your calling plan or TXT Messaging plan.
Verizon Wireless has made Mobile IM on your phone so simple and colorful, you'll think you're on your PC.

Anytime you see those two arrows moving in separate directions or see the cell phone icon, your using airtime.

That is incorrect. That means you are transmitting data. When subscribed to vcast it doesn't use airtime. Mobile IM doesn't use airtime as well.

Yes, the arrows mean transmitting data, which DOES charge airtime unless you have the $15/m VCAST package, which wasn't the question. The question was does it charge airtime-period.

I called VZW and here's what they said if you have the VCAST package there will be no air-time charge only TXT charge. However if you DON'T have VCAST package you will get charged both airtime and txt. Service is obviously unlimited airtime during night and weekends.

I don't really believe him because I remember after I cancelled my VCAST package I was online for a good 2 hours straight during weekday (peak hour) and I didn't see it on my bill. I may be wrong however.

ALSO...

If you're on the $5/month "Unlimited" TM plan, you're allocated 50 "Out of Network" messages a month. Thereafter, they are $.10 each incoming & outgoing. If you're doing any sort of TMing, that can add up quickly.

A TM is considered an "Out of Network" message.

So is a message received from vtext.com.
