I've read that a few of you have had their phone updated with v 5. Can you share with us what it does and what it fixes?

i didnt even know v5 was out...when did this happen?

Well, got the usual 'I dunno' from the assh***s at VZW, when asking about the update. Guess it's going to be the same story with this update like thew last. 😛 😛

Yeah, that's all I get, too. I can't believe that I am the only one (minus one other person) who is experiencing static with my MP3s when I have No Service which "Standalone Mode" replicates).
In fact, it was suggested that I get another one (AGAIN) and I did and I still have the same problem 99% of the time. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!! 😡
I'm about ready to give up on this all together. There's no other phone that VZW offers at this time that I want to swap for. What's a girl to do?

Do you maybe think it might be something wrong with your MP3 files that is causing the static in no service areas?? I just think its wierd that nobody else really experiences this problem. Good Luck!!!!

I don't know, that's very possible. I ripped my CDs to MusicMatch and made sure it copied them as MP3 files. Then, I used the SanDisk Mobile Mate Reader/Writer to copy the files on the MiniSD card.
I'm not sure what could've gone wrong, unless, like you said, something messed up in the process of the MP3s copied.
Thanks!

Hi Piggys...
I also use Music Match and have done the exact same as you and been OK as long as I was aware of the length of the title. My problem has been buying music from Music Match. I have to download my tunes, burn them to CD, then re-enter them into the library. Have been unable to convert direct from download to MP3 to Mini-Card. Hope you get your problem solved. You should not have to go through all this crap.

Yeah, I didn’t think I should have to go through all this crap either. It’s so strange because the MP3s play wonderfully – as long as I’m in an area of service – which I usually am.
It’s just those times that I don’t have service that I’ve wanted to listen to a song or two and instead I get PPSSSHHHHHHH (imagine that as really loud static). About 1% of the time, they’ll play (I test it in Standalone Mode) and then as soon as I get out the MP3 player, and then go back in to it, I hear PPPSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I’m so fed up and aggravated

I don't know how anyone could have so much trouble with MP3's. I use I tunes. I import everything as AIFF files for burning CD's that will play in any CD player or computer platform. I then convert those to MP3's which adds a second copy to my library. I drag that into my folder for my SD card and bingo. Never had a problem with them.

I wrote to Verizon corporate about the 8100's volume issues and they responded back to me. They said that they are aware of the problem and that an updated software fix is in the works. They also said that they had no idea when this update would be made available. At this point, I was told that I could talk to a manager at a local VZW outlet about a possible exchange. I don't really like any of their other phones though, except the 9800. Even then, that would mean I would have to shell out another $100-$150 to cover the difference in price. Just a question: is the volume issue grounds to cancel a contract?
...
That's a good question! Sorry, I don't know the answer to it - but I'm in the same boat you are - I don't like anything else they have out right now.
I'm getting really frustrated!
...
No, probably not, because they are offering you a different phone.
