"PUSH" SOFTWARE UPGRADES

just got back from the new england sales kick-off and thought i'd share one quick note. one of our data higher-ups mentioned that they should be rolling out ota software upgrades. he only mentioned it in passing so don't quote me on the details here. it would be the same as a software flash, ala v04 to 407, as people are doing at stores right now, but it would all be done over the phone kinda like *228 for your roaming list. only downside i can see is he worded it like it would be automatic, meaning non optional. it was obviously still in development so no idea on a time-line. he also seemed to imply it would only be on newer phones so i'm not sure it will ever affect the 8100.

anyway, just thought i'd share.

From what I've heard from higer tech support is that OTA is for *228 updates to the PRL and such. It allows the phone to continually be up-to-date with new towers and agreements signed with other carriers to increase our reception in areas.

Currently it's not automatic and I don't see it being anything but how it's currently implemented since it requires a reboot to take effect and you don't want that automatically if the phone's in use. Also, there's not enough RAM to download and swap out the old for the new without a reboot. At least not in the current generation of cell technology...
