LG VX-8100
V07 FAQ's
How do I get v7?
Go to a full-service Verizon store and have them install it.
What does it do?
It enables the phone to use Verizon's new VCAST Music service, which lets you download music to your phone and play WMA (Windows Media Audio) files you transfer from your computer.
Can I still play MP3s?
YES! But it's disabled by default in v7. You can reenable it in the service menu. Go to Menu, 0, 000000, Music Setting, MP3 Enable. After you enable this, the Get Tunes & Tones menu will have a My MP3s option where you can play them. If you want to use the front button, go to Menu, Settings & Tools, 1 (Tools), 3 (Shortcut Key), 2 (Play Key), My MP3s.
Are there any bug fixes?
Yes. The camera is improved. Some people have reported that the volume fluctuation issue is fixed, but I'm not going to say it's gone for sure yet.
Can I still use the dial-up networking hack that worked on v4?
Yes. See this thread for details. The procedure is identical.
Can I use VCAST Music on my computer if I'm running Linux/Mac/Win95/MS-DOS/etc.?
No. It only works with Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10.
How do I find VCAST Music in Media Player?
At the upper right, there's a down-arrow next to the MSN butterfly. Click it, and a list of online stores will appear. Go to VCAST Music. Or if you have full menus turned on, go to View->Online Stores->VCAST Music.
I tried to sign up, but it says I already have a password?
If you've already established a password for vtext.com, it's the same for VCAST Music. Otherwise, you can sign up for a new id. The id and password is not the same as the My Account id and password.
I already have a USB cable for the phone. Do I need to buy Verizon's Music Essentials Kit?
No. If you don't have drivers for the cable, download them from LG here. (Although this site is for the VX8000, it works for the VX8100 too.) Once the phone is connected to the computer with the cable, go to Get Tunes & Tones and pick 6 (Sync music). Once you do that, Windows will see a new VCAST Mobile Phone device. Go to the sync tab in Media player. Your phone will be on the right side, and you can select music on the left.
Can I sync using Bluetooth?
No.
Can I put music directly on a mini-SD memory card?
Yes, if it's not copy protected. Insert the card into the phone first to create the folders. Put the WMA files into the MY_MUSIC folder on the card.
Can I transfer non-VCAST Music files?
Maybe. Media Player will try to convert a non-WMA file to WMA when it syncs, but may not be able to due to the file format or copy protection restrictions. Also, converting MP3s or other lossy formats to WMA will reduce the audio quality.
Will I lose anything on the phone when it gets updated?
YES! It seems to remove all existing Get It Now applications. There are some unconfirmed reports that Verizon will pull the update due to this problem. Customer service should reimburse you for the lost downloads, but it might be a hassle. I didn't lose any ringtones, pictures, or contacts. However, whenever the phone is updated there's a chance it will get fried and lose everything. If you have irreplaceable information on it, copy it off first.
What version do I have on my phone?
Go to Menu, Settings & Tools, 4 (System), 3 (Device info), 2 (SW Version). The last two digits indicate the revision. The rest identifies the phone.
What versions have there been?
T81VZV01 Original release
T81VZV04 Bug fixes and MP3 player added
T81VZV06 recalled
T81VZV07 Bug fixes and VCAST Music added
I followed your lead on this ( BT ) before and am curious on what you are doing now.
So..... I dont think Version 6 was ever recalled
Last Night When I went to have my insurance replacement updated with version 7 the tech asked me why I wanted it done and I explained I still had minor fluctuation on phone and he said ok but i wanted to let you know Version 7 will erase your GIN applications and unless you really need it I would stay with Version 6
As Always Coming From Verizon They tell different people different stories so I ...

V07 DID help my speaker though! It was unbearable. Now loud and clear! My wife's V06 doesn't have any speaker issue yet and I don't see any reason for her to upgrade to V07 since the camera delay is still there.

First of all, if you re-enable the MP3 player, you can always go back and disable again to use VCAST Music. It will still be there. To transfer MP3's to your card, you don't even need a cable. You just format the card in the phone, put it in the reader, then your folders will pop up on your PC. You then drag your MP3's (no need to convert to WMA's for MP3 player, keep them as MP3's) from your desktop to the MY_MP3 folder on your card, put your card back in your phone then press and hold the front play button to begin or access the MP3 player through GET TUNES & TONES, MY_MP3's. The only reason you would need a cable and Bitpim ...

Also, does Bitpim & the cable transfer photos, too, or only music? (fotos being a whole nother topic as well..I am more into fotos than music, actually). I know the 6100 office kit data cable will do this on the 6100, and people have posted here that both the 6100 and 8000's cables work on the 8100 as well. Can...
