i love everything about this phone except for the reception. unfortunately, the reception is the most important thing on any phone, and they couldn't even get this right.
the reception on my 8100 is so bad that i can't get through a 5 minute conversation in my own house or at work without dropping a call. also, i am not getting reception in places where i used to before i got this phone, and I have friends whose "suckier" phones work MUCH better in the same places I am dropping calls. i have had enough. I really have 2 questions now:
1. has anyone ever had any problems returning a phone for another brand? I know people have gotten replacements, but that is not what I want.
2. what would be the best phone to exchange for if the ...

You must have not updated, because this phone gets some of the best reception around. I and my friend with "THe V" are the only two people I know that can get reception in the dorms at college and everywhere else. I even got reception in Bastrop Louisiana. DO YOU KNOW WHERE THAT IS? lol. Middle of NO WHERE and I still had 4 bars. You just need to do *228 to update towers (i think thats it), because it has GREAT reception.

Actually, i have gone through tech support twice with all the latest updates and system checks, and that didn't work. I even got them to give me an outright replacement with a brand-new phone, and that still didn't change things one bit.
If I could keep this phone I would. It is the best phone I have ever used, but for some reason, the reception in my area, Utah, sucks.
the reception is so bad that people don't even call me as much! 🙂) Also, i tried talking to tech support, and the call kept dropping them while i was complaining. 🙂
I wish this phone worked for me.

i get like 0-1 bars at my house, i have the 8100, 8000, 815 and have tried out the razor. You must have got a crappy one because my 8100 picks up better than the razor and the 8000 where i live. I have no problems with the 8100, sometimes the 815 drops calls but it comes in a close 2nd place. So i maybe try getting it exchanged

do you have the new sw update? maybe its just me, and it probably is, but i think i got better signal after i got the update.

i have version 7 can't really tell a difference

well those are all digital only phones so they should get about the same...

ok, well i also used to have a 710, 720,4400 the results still would have put the all digital phone ahead. Both my old motos would switch to analog and drop the call at my house, the 4400 would just stick in analog all the time so i actually choose to ger an all digital headset since the analog was just more anoying then helpful at my house so i got a 6000, worked pretty good and i have stuck with all digital handsets since then. Yes i get a poor signal and analog would pick up better but my 8100 is crystal clear and never drops calls at my house even though it shows 0 bars of service. My 815 and 8000 will not pick up vcast or the evdo at my house, they both switch to 1x as soon as you try to connect to mobile web or vcast. My 8100 does not ...

I am in Utah also and I only drop calls in 1 place, right by the army base, everywhere else it workes great.

i appreciate the responses so far. i have gotten a new phone and I have all the updates, and still i get the same thing. i still drop calls at home, work, and other random spots where everyone else seems to talk fine. i really don't understand it.
I will look to see if lg has some sort of extendable antenna as someone suggested, but i may have to try a different brand in the end.

what part of UT are you in the wasatch front(SLC, Odgen, Provo) or southern or northern
...
I live in the benches of SLC, and i always drop calls at home. However, I also work in Orem, and my calls are always dropped in north Orem as well, even when i am in my car.

Swap the phone. I have had 5 for other reasons but reception has always been pretty good. LG phones are not noted for great reception. If that's what you want, get the Moto e815. Has great reception, but that's all.
...
I would agree with Mortfe...swap the phone..am in SLC and Orem all the time and never drop calls. I work right by the Riverwoods in Provo and have never droped a call there.

I'm on my 3rd phone and going for a 4th tomorrow. I love the phone but the reception has been horrible. I think it's just a combo of bad luck with getting bad phones a.k.a. Lemons...I'll let you know how the 4th one is.

I had poor reception with my first 8100..had it nearly the 2 weeks and kept it under that 60 minutes which was easy since the feedback was so bad and there was static. I took it back and exchanged it for another one and now it works great. I get clear reception and the static is not a problem either.
I remember when the LG510 came out..I got two bad ones and vowed never to use LG again..then after the StarTac and Timeport which I loved I had the T720 which worked for me but not for lots of others..upgraded to an LG6000 and it was just fine...I have kept it as back up. Upgraded only because I wanted bluetooth. Bottom line, there seem to be some lemons out there but when you get one that works well it is just great.Maybe I just got lucky. 😁...
