Japan is leaps and bounds beyond us (and Europe). They've had video calling for nearly 2 years now on their iDen stuff.

Our infrastructure isn't up to it yet. VZW's EVDO static and burst rates are great, comparatively... but we've got a ways to go before there's enough solid bandwidth to work with. Heck, it would also help if (as a country) we could decide on a flippin' standard! It helps Europe (and others) that as countries they've got a single standard... i.e., Europe and GSM, for example. This is one time where capitalism and competition works against us 🙂

okay so if you had to guess when would our infrastructure be up to par? i mean i would think from a marketing perspective that companies like verizon would be dying to cash in on video calling. and just for funn..which company..if you HAD to predict would get this feature first..i'm gonna guess sprint, then again verizon was the first with real 3g.hmmmmm..... 😎

With greater processing power on the phone side, then we can limit the amount of bandwidth needed... so... it's all just a matter of time when they converge. The Japan stuff was only 15 frames/sec stuff on iDEN. So it's not like full-frame video just yet.

I'd predict VZW might be the first to the gate from a network perspective. They're the ones who sunk the most into their network to get it here. Sprint sucks from a coverage standpoint so I totally discount them. If Cingular's next-gen WCDMA pushes forward then who knows?
