Battery Life when Looking for Service

I recently was moved to an office at work where the building completely destroys VZW service. So from 9am-4pm everyday my phone switches from having no service to having zero bars a couple times a minute while I’m in the office. This makes my battery completely die around 4pm and forces my phone to shut off. Then, here’s the interesting part… When I leave the building, I turn my phone on and i get full service, and the battery meter on phone my phone slowy goes to like ¾ of a bar and the battery lasts the rest of the night.

Why does this happen?
Is there a way I can fix it?

Short of paying to have some sort of repeater installed in your building, I'd say you are stuck with turning off your phone, or at least putting it in Standalone mode, until you are out of the building.

What's happening is very similar to when a tri-mode phone goes from a digital service area to an analog service area - the phone takes much more juice to function, and the battery just doesn't last very long.
