NO WIFI FOR THE SAMSUNG I730

Well, we can’t say that we’re really too surprised to learn that there’s apparently not going to be any WiFi action happening with the Samsung i730 — at least, not in Verizon’s implementation of it. As we all know too well by now, that would be just too much functionality, now wouldn’t it.

First of all, I am not sure where brighthand got their sources, since there's a war between testers and brighthand/blog sites saying that there is or isn't wifi for the i730.

To be honest, the only way to really know if wifi is present or not is the release. People should stick to the more relevant "ill believe it when i see it" mantra rather than go on sites and word of mouth speculation.

Regardless, wait, and hey, good things might happen. If not, move on, and get something else that has all the bells and whistles.

This information coupled with the Verizon information that notably omits any mention of Wi-Fi, indicates that once again Verizon is protecting its investment in EV-DO by crippling the built-in features of this great device.

The jury will remain out until the product is formally released. However, if this phone does not contain Wi-Fi, one huge advantage of merging phone and PDA goes away for me. I will instead buy a regular phone and carry a PDA when I need it. And I will never subscribe to Verizon's EV-DO service.

I am a frustrated v710 user and I felt that verizon was redeeming themselves with this phone. Ready to forgive and forget. But if the are going to pull the same bull sh#%, and disable functions again, I think I am going to leave them and go to another carrier. Their greediness is getting too ridiculous.

It will have wifi. Engadget reports lots of incorrect information. For instance, they say it is going to have a 1.3 megapixel camera, which it will not (at first anyway). They also said that one of their sources informed them at the i730 would be out next week, which was about a month ago. On pdaphonehome.com there is a gentleman who is testing one (he has the first release) and it has wifi.

Sup folks? As of right now I'm the newest forum member.

I don't really care about hot spots, I just wanted to be able to connect to my home network wirelessly. Will we be able to use a Wifi MMC card for that?

Also is it likely that Samsung will release an unlocked fully functional version of this one?

You probably have a better chance to win the lottery then expecting Verizon to release a phone that is unlocked...

I believe that's why he didn't ask that. His question was:

"Also is it likely that Samsung will release an unlocked fully functional version of this one?"

Exactly. Just like the i700 and other models that you can buy from expansys.com etc. I might be willing to pay a bit more for a WIFI enabled device, especially if it would work on T-mobile. EVDO isn't a big deal for me right now (I like the idea of being able to get it later though) and Verizon is more expensive. It would be cool to use my phone on the subway though, like the other Verizon customers I see.

Welcome hookiefree... 😎

I'm interested in the prospect of an unlocked version as well, and had floated a similar question in April...

Another user was kind enough to weigh-in on the question with a reply, but I was unable to glean from the reply (which I appreciated), whether or not I was all wet (which I generally assume I am 🙂 ).

I was just hoping to escape carrier-affinity in North America from a contract & service perspective, but have since also learned that a particular carrier may drop certain OEM features if they lack the infrastructure or business-case to support them - [e.g. the camera & WiFi with this phone - both of which I'm interested in].
