Bluetooth and BMW

Here is what BWM North America said about this phone syncing.

Hopefully, Verizon will come our with a software update or something so the phonebooks will work properly!!

"Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding your 200
BMW 330i. That is a great model and we hope it will serve you well.

Unfortunately, Palm One Treo 650 and the Samsung i730 are not and
probably never will be compatible with the BMW Bluetooth system in your
vehicle. The BMW Bluetooth system uses the standard BT Hands-free Profile
(HFP 1.0) with additional commands implemented on top of the BT standard
to transfer phonebook data from the phone to the car. This enables the
user to access their phonebook and dial from the vehicle's

Does this phone work at all with the integrated BMW bluetooth, or do only certain bluetooth functions not work?

From what I understand form both VZW and BMWUSA is that is should work, but it will not tranfer the phonebook. All this means is you have to dial from the phone...not a huge deal. Also, VZW says there will "probably" be a DUN patch released so the phone book will eventually transfer.

So from what I understand, the speakerphone in the car should work. Will the car understand the dial command, and if so, can I say the name of the person that I wish to dial if it is stored in the phone itself and not the phonebook that would be transferred to the car?

rsinkhorn, From what I understand, Acura and BMW use the same BT profile, DUN (Dial up), so it should be the same thing (same problems, same limited usage).

RINGO, Thanks for the insight. I am disappointed and hope you are wrong. Is it likely that Verizon or Acura will provide a 'patch' or upgrade. Like everyone else in the forum, I was excited to get this phone. If it won't work with my car, I may have to rethink. I hate to go with a BB, but I may have too... ouch. Anyplace else I should look for answers? Thanks!!

rsinkhorn, unfortunately (for both of us) I'm never wrong (unless my wife is in the room). Acura and BMW both use the DUN bluetooth profile and it is not fully compatiable. It should work, you just will not be able to tranfer you phonebook (you will have to dial on the phone, not a huge deal) but everything else should work fine.

I am getting my sammy tomorrow AM and I will be taking it to the BMW dealership to have it synced with my 330, so I will let you know if I have any problems...

RINGO - Thanks for the additional information. Atleast I will be able to pair it. I was thinking it wouldn't pair at all... Good luck with the 330. I will likely buy it in the next few weeks. My firm is upgrading to Goodlink 4 and I want to try the Sammy with it.. I let you know how it goes with my Acura...

hey rsinkhorn, this is what I found out about syncing/pairing with the BT DUN profile (used in BMW, Acura, Mini, and a few others)... We are pretty much screwed! The damn thing will pair, but it does one of two things when you try to use it. Either it will work (full-functioning, minus the phone book and other options) for around 10-30 seconds, then it will transfer back to the handheld unit, or it will work fine for the entire call but it will not allow you to hang up the call (you have to disconnect BT through your phone to hang up)! Either way it sucks pretty bad! Both Verizon and Samsung say they "doubt" there will be a DUN patch released, but I have a feeling if enough of us call/email they might change their minds (why punish us fo...

RINGO - Thanks for the additional information. Very dissappointing the issues you noted. I have already sent an email to Verizon. I hate the thought of getting a second line just to enable BT, but I may have to do it. I have contemplated just getting a damn Blackberry and be done with it... it has such limited functionality though... I plan on trying the Samsung soon and will let you know what I end up with...

Tried the 730 on my BMW 645 Tonight - Yikes , Could not get much of anything going.. It would actually not even make a call. How about the Treo 650 syncs up and send the speed dials automatically..

Now it gets more interesting.. The I730 connected to my Lexus RX330 Truck was freaking awesome tonight. I press send phonebook on the lexus Screen and then highlight names on the I730 and send.. The 730 magically sends whatever names to the Lexus like magic..

So what is this all about ??

Bluetooth is sickly incompatible..

I have 5 Bluetooth cars and about 4-5 bluetooth phones and they all do something different..

Yuk..

There is Sprint patch for the Treo 650 (www.palmone.com). -You can hack it to work with your VZW Treo. As far as the Samsung goes...check with BMW north america and see if your X5 uses the DUN BT profile (I'm almost positive it does). If it is DUN, you're screwed! -I actually purchased the motorola i710 (which sync with DUN just fine) just to stay in my '06 330 and I have my calls forward after 4-6 rings/busy (with the no answer transfer, *71 send to active and *73 to deactivate) from my Sammy to my motorola. It sucks to have to check VM on another line, only because you don't know without calling if you have any messages. Anyway, I would either stick with the inferior Treo and have it work it your X5, or go with the awesome samsung and ...

I would say it really depends on how bad you want/need it to pair with your X5. The sammy is the dominate phone, but there is a better chance of getting treo to work with your X5 than it ever working with the samsung.

Using BT handsfree in my beemer was pretty important to me, but I loooove the phone, so I (like I said ) I forward my sammy when im in the car to a motorola i710 (which pairs perfectly with DUN/BMW). -Other than the BT issue, I couldn't be happier with the samsung!

By the way, the Motorola e815 (the second generation i710) also pair perfectly with BWM, so if you go the "car phone" rout you have that option as well. Good luck...
