2.5mm is headset jack size (phones). 3.5mm is standard for headphones (MP3 players, etc...)

The best I have found that gives awesome stereo "surround sound" and super loud is the Jabra stereo headset from Verizon!

I can listen to my MP3s in a standard (wired) 2.5 mm headset but when I hook up my bluetooth headset, the sound comes out of the phone.

At the end of Dec, I hope, Shure is coming out with a new headset and mic combo. These are NOT your cheap headsets you see on Verizon's website. These are high quality headsets that sound great...price point is between $100 and $500, modeled after the E series headset.
