Can this phone do what I need??
Thanks for taking the time to read… I want my phone to be able to access my gmail account. Similar to a blackberry, I want a phone to alert me when I receive a new email from gmail, and I want to be able to read and respond to the email from the device. Can this phone do that? What extra services will I need from Verizon (ie Mobile Web, Vcast, etc) Will I get charge per email message? Will I get charged airtime when writing/reading an email? I probably would have bought a blackberry, or treo already, but as far as I know, in order to access email from those “smart phones” it is an additional 40 a month. That is how much I pay for my phone service! Anyone know the cheapest way to get what I am looking for? I really want the qwerty f...

Yes it can, however the biggest difference on the email for the 9800 Vs a BB like you listed would be the times. A BB is an "always on" device and that is why it like the other PDA/Smartphones require a completely separate data plan. The BB continuously checks for email or event updates. The 9800 is a little different, you have time settings to select from. You can check email or event updates on your own each time you want to, manually. Or select from the 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes options for the device to the check on its own (Sorry, don't have mine with me right now but I believe those are the options, but you at least get the idea of it even if one not correct)

wow thanks for the fast reply, but i think i am even more confused. What is the difference between wireless snyc and vcast? If they are $35, and I need both in order to send/receive emails from g-mail, why wouldnt someone just pay an extra $5 and get the full data package (includes real time email and web) that is offered for the smartphones? basicly, i would like to know what additional services would i have to obtain in order to send/recieve email from gmail and for it to be unlimited? You can use any POP3 or IMAP email acct, and even multiple accounts!

Yes, **IF** you have it set to one of the auto check times (15, 30, etc mins). If you have it set to manual check there will be no alert because you or the phone will not know until you do the manual push. If using one of the timed settings it would be just like when a new TXT, PIX, FLIX came in.

1. Wireless Sync with Vcast = 19.99 + 15.00 per moth. With this combo you will get unlimited usage when on the web, checking, sending, etc email (on top of all the normal Vcast services already included. in the feature -> http://getitnow.vzwshop.com/vcast.learn.techn ology.do )
