Here is one way...
From the front panel, select Message with left soft key. Select Settings with left soft key.
Select (2) Txt Message. Select (1) Auto View.
Select On + Readout. Select OK. Look for the confirm of the save. Select End.

And neither do I get sound doing that 1/Face key thing.
Not sure about the function of the 1/Face key. Still learning. My text to speech works when I receive a text message and it asks me Do I want to View Now. I indicate YES and the text to speech works. I'm sure there are other ways for it to work. I'll chase the 1/Face key and see what that function is for. Thanks.

I was checking out the 9800 yesterday in the Verizon store and did come acrosss something worth asking. First of all, does the text to speech only work when the phone is flipped open? Second question, is there any way to adjust the speed at which the voice reads you the text message? It was going a little too fast for me.

No, there can be a text to speech function operation with the Folder (Flip) closed if you have set Auto View to On + Readout. But, to do a manual text to speech function, you must open the Flip, select a text document, and press Space to manually do the text to speech thing. In other words, there is an Auto and then there is the Manual Text to Speech Function. Auto will work with Flip closed or open. Manual works only with Flip Open (Space Key). I do not know of anyway to change the speed of the function.

Ok thanks. I'm going to have to try that when i go back to the Verizon store again sometime soon. I'm very curious to see how it really does work.

Let's talk again about the #1 key with the "talking head" on it. It was earlier referred to as the #1 key with a "face" on it. No matter, it is the same key. It seems to me the #1 key function when selected pertains to the accessing of the voice mail box and not the text to speech function. Is that incorrect?
I cannot get the #1/talking head key to do a text to speech action.
My text to speech worked when the folder (flip) was opened and upon accessing an incoming text message. I need to learn more about this capability.

After enabling the Text to Speech function, open the Folder (Flip). Now open any received text message or any saved notepad entry. Press the SPACE button and the speech should be heard.
