I just purchased the 9800 on Monday, I was wondering what are the latest software updates and if any of the updates removed a lot of GIN stuff (like the 8100 update).

I don't know the number for the most recent software, but, I can tell you that the next software update for it will be the package to enable VCast Music.

But does it erase applications in GIN? That's what happened with my 8100. Someone please let me know before I get it updated.

I have never had a software update erase GIN applications. I heard the V-Cast Music Update does just though. But the V-Cast Music update is not out for the 9800 yet so you shouldn't have anything to worry about. And, if it does, Verizon should credit you for re-downloading them since it isn't your fault for losing them in the first place.

The updates you are speaking of- are they over the air updates or do you have to bring it to the store? the update I just got required going to the store.

the Vo2 software update disable the ability of downloading movies on to your mini SD memory card and playing them, and i think also images.

the music on demand update will require a trip to the store. the over the air updates are only for your roaming list at this point(there are plans to make more software updates available for ota) there is always a possibility of memory loss(that means everything, not just gin apps) when doing a software upgrade.

I know you risk losing everything but with the 8100 update I had done, it erased them and you could not access GIN to get them back. So, in a nutshell I dont' wanna go through that again. They claim they're working on that issue but VZW says that about everything.
