The Samsung A950 is listed as one of the supported phones with transfers from the PC to the phone via USB cable.

i heard they are disabling/crippling transflash cards so you can't put your own mp3's from the computer for free and are forced to buy from them

That would be insane. I definitely want to find out about the changes implemented in the flash upgrade before I have it done. Not going to be the first on my block with an upgraded A950.

This from engadget

Sounds like microsoft forced them to only allow only WMA format to be used.

Sounds like more of a downgrade than upgrade.

this is so dumb would you be allowed to put wma on your transflash card though and use that on your phone? or they do disable that so you have to buy from them no matter what even if you have the song on your computer already?
lol does anyone know?
thanks in advance =]

you can change the format from MP3 to WMA & trasnfer that to your transflash. So you can still use your own music.

You cannot change formats from mp3 to wma without ending up with a poor quality sound file. That would be a cross-codec conversion and would yield extremely crappy quality. The only way to generate a half way decent WMA file is to encode from the original source (the original CD).

Doing cross-codec conversions really means taking a lossy-compressed file and recompressing it with another lossy compression algorithm. The resulting file is going to be awful.

Users of QuickTime have seen this for years. Take a QT video compressed with Sorenson 3 and then export it out with the MPEG-4 video codec. The resulting video looks awful.

I wouldn't count on being able to pick and choose which features you have updated. It's probably going to be a single upgrade.

My guess is when V06 comes out for MOD, it will just be for MOD and possibly an update later for issues, which you could wait for that if that is the case. You can not get a partial update. If the issues are included with the MOD update then you get all or none.

I have heard that .wma files actually sound much better than mp3 files. So it isn't all gloom and doom. However, since most people have gotton used to the mp3 format with their ipods, it is going to be hard to convince people to switch to .wma. Yet we all switched from VHS to DVD's. We switched from casettes to CD's. Certainly, Verizon will have a problem on their hands if they don't warn people before they upgrade their firmware, that their phone won't be able to handle mp3 files without converting them to .wma. After all, this phone was promoted as the "mp3 Maestro", when they bought it. It is noteworthy, that Samsung has now renamed the a950 to the "music Maestro". That either means they crippled the phone so it won't handle mp3's...

I really hope that it handles both.

It appears that the change to .wma is to wma-64 (the 64kb/s codec). In tests done by PC World magazine, 5% of listeners thought that a wma-64 file sounded as good as the original (CD-audio) while 69% of listeners thought the mp3-128 sounded as good as the original.

But it is true that wma-64 sounds much better than mp3-64. However, this is a false comparison because I doubt many of us have mp3 files encoded at such a low bitrate.

A VX8100 user with the vcast service has posted that he was able to enable mp3 on his phone using the service menu.

If this really does work, that would be awesome! I would definately get the upgrade then. Can anyone verify if this really works? I'm skeptical since MOD isn't released yet. How could he have it? I guess I can't really ask anyone to verify either since it's ot out, buy maybe someone has inside info?

The claim was that a small number of the VX8100s shipped with the updated software by mistake.

also just one more thing to note that all frus will have the new mod service on it, so if you have to replace your phone just know that now it will be no choice if you want it or not it will come with it on there.
