Speed? Wait on HSDPA?

dup

I'm loving the features of this phone, but am wondering whether I should wait until the HSDPA phones start coming out. A HSDPA phone with these features could be how far out, another year or two? Could it be possible that Cingular will charge a ridiculous amount for the HSDPA speed and aim it a pure business users?

I doubt that they'll charge the proverbial arm and leg for HSDPA access, but you can bet that the devices themselves will be a bit on the pricey side for a while. As for seeing one with this type of feature set.....won't happen for quite a while. Jump on this when you can and by the time something drops that's similar with HSDPA you'll be ready for an upgrade.

For pricing on HSDPA stuff on Cingular: we'll be charging about what Verizon & Sprint charge for EV-DO access, at least in terms of monthly cost. The devices themselves aren't going to be much more than the prices on PDA-type stuff now. I don't know of any 3G PDA in the pipe for Cingular yet, but I'd be surprised if we didn't have one by 3Q at the latest.

Of course, seeing as the 8125 has wifi as well as EDGE, it's by no means crippled when it comes to data access. If it were me, I wouldn't bother waiting for an HSDPA device, the 8125 is fine enough.

They can come to T-Mobile and pay for Unlimited Data and be able to tether all they want, with no stupid limitation on data use. 😎

T-Mobile will have/has the same restrictions on data use that all the other mobile providers have: "Use our data services for anything we don't approve of, & we'll shut you down." How they define what is & is Not acceptable is worded differently under each carrier's contract info, but I guarantee that if a subscriber does something the carrier doesn't approve of, they'll shut you down.

Czech out Cingular's particular bit of this:

"Data Service sessions may only be conducted for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) e-mail; and (iii) corporate intranet access (including access to corporate e-mail, customer relationship management, sales force automation, and field service automation applications). The Services cannot be us...

Don't know if you happen to be a T-Mobile dealer and are out to provide incorrect information to sway people to your service or what, but to clarify, Cingular also has Unlimited data plans. As well as unlimited data plans, WCDMA's update packet which is HSPDA (to clarify that that is the service, not HSDPA) will destroy anything on the market of compeditors... And t-mobile, even with Cingular's Edge at the time being, isn't a compeditor 😲 . UMTS compatible devices have been confermed in the current cities available for this service of speeds up to 3.6Mbs 😈 . Soon available after the release across the network of WCDMA will be HSPUA, which is the upload service to the package... which currently has been confermed at speeds of 6.4Mbs....

I am not a T-Mobile dealer. I am a customer. You claim that Cingular has unlimited data plans, but have u realized that they are really expensive compared to T-Mobile unlimited data? Oh also, you need to learn how to write the correct abbreviations in your last sentence when you talk about your so called knowledge of data services.

Cingulars data plans might be a bit more pricer then T-Mobile, but it's a matter of service. T-Mobile does not have the coverage area that Cingular does (in the US) and it will take T-Mobile a while to deploy UTMS/3GSM (2007 is their start date). Cingular is already moving to compete with Verizon and Sprint and on top of that Europe is moving to 4GSM while Verzion and Sprint have to invent the wheel, Cingular let's them prove it in Europe and deploy in the USA.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cingular didn't have a 3G device out by Q3. I was a long-time Cingular/PacBell Wireless customer (bag phone days) and recently left. I was frustrated with Cingular's inability to keep up and the long delays in releasing new technology (EDGE is not new or competitive).

Call quality, signal strength, customer service are about the same as what I had with Cingular, but EVDO and the availablility of the XV6700 with Verizon finally pushed me to change.

Hey fonaphile... i'm not quite sure where you are located but i'm curious of a couple things you posted on. Call quality should be truthfully the best with Cingular depending on location though. With rural 850 band from 1900 while traviling will cause quality loss due to transfering of bands. Think of it as changing your radio station on your car, you can't hear another radio station if listening to 96.7 until dialing it in. When changing channels there is a mix of noise and fuzz. Now think of that in nano-seconds automatically done on your phone from band to band. As well Cingular has the nation's largerest coverage, but dependent upon location to the nearest radio tower, you may have lower signal strength in rural areas. As to EVDO... may ...

I'm in the Hollywood (CA) area. I stayed with Cingular for many years and for the most part was a satisfied customer. A few things from time-to-time pissed me off, but nothing to make me switch (customer service fixed things to my satisfaction in nearly every case). I definitely prefer the flexibility of GSM even though I don't travel internationally.

I started a new job last year and travel almost every week. I desperately needed a phone that had speedy internet and a qwerty keypad (T9 sucks when you receive 50 emails a day). I tried demos of the Treo and HP versions that Cingular has out, but they didn't perform very well (very slow..needed to reboot). I've been waiting for the Mpx300, Nokia 9300 (w/850) and recently the 8125...wi...

Right on to that. See what i don't understand is people blatently bashing Cingular for non-legit reasons. If you need the service now, you need the service now. Also just to drop a little info i've found myself in research, Cingular, Verizon & Sprint (Fastest wireless data transfer companies w/ service) all are kind of steep dependant upon whether you need an ulimited data plan for laptop connect. To solve this problem though you can use your phone as a modem which Verizon right now if it is detected they will cancel your service along w/ having to pay your termination. Sprint has a phone as a modem plan costing more than a regular unlimited data connect through phone plan. Cingular has real no word on good or bad, so for now, if you know ho...

I've heard on other boards people worrying about the Media Works being changed to the Unlimited Data by Cingular if usage increases...sure if it true.

I needed this phone as a laptop replacement. I was bringing my laptop with me on business trips because I needed to respond to email...view attachments...not to work necessarily. It sucks to drag around a laptop just for email...and don't always stay in a hotel (with a network connection)...sometimes just for the day.

So far it is working well (not perfect, but it works really well). I've been approached by about five strangers in the airport bar asking me about my phone (they see me sending and receiving email).

Bull Sheisse 🤣 Media Works is for "smart phones", basically any phones with the ability to acess the internet and send and/or recieve MMS. This is because they can access the 'Edge' network. Faster data speed to send a larger amount of data. BLAH.

Unlimited Data, or Data Connect (with the option of doing Unlimited Data), is for PDA phones. The reason this is different is because is for phones/pda's with the ability to access full sized html pages. Wap webpages are on average about 10x smaller. Sooo, if you simply put food to thought, $19.99 for MEdia Net unlimite (i'll get back to this) and currently promo of $59.99 for unlimited Data Connect which is usually $79.99.
Along with explanation of data size and why more and blah,...
