Question regarding Wi-Fi

OK - please be patient...

Can I connect to my wireless server (or any wireless server for that matter) with this device without subscribing to the additional service through a provider? (Does the connectivity function like a laptop?)

As many of you know many hotels, coffee shops, etc... have wireless connection. Do I have to subscribe to the addtional service provided by Cingular to take advantage of the connectivity at these locations?

I just want a device that works as a phone and a PDA while traveling but be able to connect to the internet without having to pay for additional service (I already pay for connectivity at home - and I am frugal)

Thanks!

There's nothing to subscribe to from Cingular to use Wi-Fi. Any unsecure location the Wi-Fi locks in on you can connect to. It will auto locate if turned on & you have opt to connect or not. It tells you wheather its secure or unsecure. In start, settings, connections, connections, then tap advanced, then select Networks. If you're using E/GPRS (under Network Management) set both to Media Net. If you're using Wi-Fi, go to same place, & change both to My Work Network or Wi-Fi (which ever is listed). And you cannot connect to Media Net while in Wi-Fi mode. 😎

Thanks a lot for the information. I understand what you are saying. The only thing I don't understand is: after talking with Cingular they said that if I connect without a data plan they can tell and will charge per Kb for data transfer. I guess I don't understand how they will know when I am connecting to the Internet via a wireless connection. Must have something to do with the Sim card?

Thanks Again.

No, what they're saying is if you connect by GPRS without a plan they'll know and charge you the standard, non-plan per MB charge.

They don't care if you use Wifi to connect.
