I currently have a Treo 650 which I use to connect my Laptop to the internet. Does this phone have a similar capability or should I stick with my Treo?

I was curious about this myself. I'm sure that I could set it up as a modem, but Cingular's connection manager will not recognize it as a USB device to connect to. Any advise?\

I could be wrong on this cause I haven't took the time to try it yet. I believe there is a "Modem Setup" program on the cd that comes with your 8125. You run that, it'll install the drivers I'm sure for your 8125 to be recognized as a modem. Then on your list of program files I also think there's something that says "modem link". If cingular's connection manager won't recognize it, try making a manual connection. Like in IE I believe it's under the settings/connection tab and go for "setup" and you can make a new dialup connection.

Since you would be using the phone as a modem you would need an actual data plan (i think) As far as Cingular's dial up info you'll need a few things.

Username - [email protected] or ISPDA@CINGU...

Ok, gave it a whirl, and man it was super shady. I'm sure there are settings to tweak and this and that to do, but I'm just too tired to troubleshoot hehe

As for success, I had a bit..

First put the cd that came with my 8125 in, put active sync on this laptop cause it "requires" it.. after finishing, one of the options is "install other programs" or what not.. and the ONLY thing in there is "Modem link drivers" or something related to that..

After you install it (your 8125 should be hooked up at this point) It'll ask you to configure the connection I used the username - [email protected] and password CINGULAR1 and Access Point (APN)- wap.cingular.

It lets you put all that in but hit "dial" it was greyed out for me..

Sounds like I need to stick w/my Treo... although it would be nice to find a better device. Were you attempting to use the 8125 as a "dialing out modem" or simply attempting to bridge directly w/the data network. (There is a program -PDAnet- that allows me to "bridge" the data network directly to a pc-->no dialing) Thanks for the response!

It just recognized as a modem, so I just made a new connection like I would back in the dial up modem days. Haven't tried the PDAnet, I'll look into it and see what I can come up with!

So did it work? I tried to connect my computer as well bluetooth and I had to click on show all devices and I was able to locate it. I connected it and paired it and everything was peachy. Once I got it connected I hit dial after all the information was correct and it gave me an error and said the phone or modem is not functioning properly and I just kinda gave up. But I want to be able to do it.

For me, no, I never got a chance to get that program he was discussing, but for me it would connect then disconnect. ☹️

I have an 8125 and it works fine while tethering.

The step I used are as follows:

Put in the Active Sync cd that came with your device.

Go to Start/Programs/Modem Link

Start modem link and connect it to your laptop

Your PC should find the device and ask you to install it.

Make sure that is searches your cd for the driver.

It should find it and install as a modem on your laptop.

Create a new dial up connection using the new modem. Use *99# as the number to dial.

You should be setup and ready to go now.
