Pop email and Medianet

After some time online with tech support I finally got my Gmail account set up on my 8125. But then they said it won't work because I have MediaNet unlimited and I need a PDA plan. I know there has been some talk about this here, is this really true, is there a work-around? If this is true I'm going to strangle the guy at the cingular store that sold me the plan 👿

Thanks

Yes, it is all set up correctly. I've been frequenting the cingular message boards and figured out what happened. Cingular has caught onto people using the medianet package ($20) opposed to the PDA Connect Plan ($40) and they started to lock down servers, or switch you to the PDA connect plan WITHOUT even warning you. If you are using the internet and email ALOT, then they will switch you to the PDA connect plan and won't tell you. I was lucky and they just locked down the email portion of server and didn't charge me extra. I still think its screwed up, I'm pissed and plan on bitching to cingular this weekend. I smell a class action lawsuit coming on.

Good luck ! All cellphone companies are the same. Deaf ears. Especially the ones with great coverage. They know we need them.
Although, I must admit this changing of terms without saying anything to you seems arrogant.
Must be in contracts or they would't be getting away with it. Unless they found some loophole to wiggle out..Unreal !

You actually have to have both. I have this phone (I love it by the way). I didnt have the PDA plan at first, but it allows you access to a different network and higher speeds as well as having unlimited data. The MediaNEt works to allow you to have MMS/SMS access. If you only have the PDA plean, no messaging. You can do with just having the Net plan, but your phone will not perfrm as it should when you are surfing.

So your paying $60 a month for data access?!?! WOW!! You don't actually have to have the media net plan for MMS/SMS, you can do a pay per use, which can get expensive. But besides all that, I think its pretty F'd up what cingular is doing. If you are using MediaNet then reading the thread from the Cingular message board is a MUST. Its a long thread, but has some eye-opening information. Wish I would have known this before I bought the 8125. I love the phone but can't justify an extra $40 a month for mobile email.

Ok. I work as a Cingular Sales support rep. Basically my function is to teach our authorized dealers about our services. I don't claim to know everything but here is what I know as a rep and as an 8125 owner.

You can use the $19.99 plan or any other media-net plan. According to Cingular though you should be on the 44.99 data only or 39.99 data w/voice PDA plan.

The differences are confusing even to me but here it goes.

The 19.99 plan uses a Cingular Firewalled connection using the WAP.cingular APN. What ports the firewall blocks I really don't know.

The 39.99 plan uses the ISP.cingular APN. This goes straight to the Internet.

There isn't much difference in speed and I don't know what exactly the firewall blocks. I haven't see...

Soda,

I totally agree with everything you said, but I used to be able to recieve email with the medianet plan and as of last weekend, now I can't. Other users on the Cingular message board have reported the same thing, its like they blocked email on the wap server. Thankfully they didn't automatically sign me up for the data plan, but I'm still a little sore about the whole thing.

When I try and check my email it first says "connecting" and then after it connects its asks for my user name and password. I'll enter it in, click on the "save password" option and try and log into my email account. After it trys, it just asks for my password again, over and over. It pretty bad that Cingular employees sell you the wrong thing, and Cing...

I agree that they shouldn't have done that, if that is what they did.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
