Flash/Message Waiting Indicator/Status light is flashing

My flash/MWI/status light keeps flashing. Sometimes green, sometimes red. I can't find any message waiting. (1) Why is my phone doing this and (2) how can I stop it? Thank you for any assistance.

have you tryed turning it on and off? have you tryed updating your phones software?
