Can you believe it!? i'm a little in shock. See my below corrispondence with Verizon:

Dear (Name Removed)

Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. I appreciate your inquiry regarding the Motorola Q. My name is Lee, and I am happy to assist you today. This handset will be capable of 'dial up networking' via bluetooth.

We provide three options to choose from for obtaining new service with us:

1. You may place orders online by clicking on the following link, www.verizonwireless.com/plans which will direct you to the "Plans" page of our website.

2. You may visit a local Verizon Wireless store in your area, where a sales representative will be happy to assist you. To obtain a list of stores in your area, ...

The PCMag review that was just done had this:

"You'll also be able to use the Q as a modem for your laptop later this year, at a $15-per-month premium to your service plan. "

A premium? Any VZW people confirm this?

Maybe our helpful On Line forum verizon rep only answers the low lying fruit?

Do we have free modem access or no?

To use your the Q or any other pda device as a modem you will need to add a premium service of $15.00 on top of your unlimited data plan. So that means that you pay a total of $59.99 ($15 for modem + $44.99 unlimited data service) on top of your voice plan in order to your phone as a modem via bluetooth or tethered connection.

What's the $15 for? Just to use it as a modem? That doesn't sound right.

And you can still get 1xRTT for free (minutes only usage), right? I don't need EV-DO.

why would you want to cripple the device's speed capabilities, which is the EV-DO, and use 1xRTT? That is like having a Porshe, but only driving it 25 MPH.

Because it cost 20% of the phone every month to go faster.

Actually it does not cost more to teather a PDA device to a laptop as a modem...I am not sure what VZW will do about the Q however. My understanding is it will not be rolled out with modem capability. The unlimited data plan is $44.95 on top of your cell bill, there is no additional charge to use the device as a modem. In fact, our data manager uses a bluetooth dungle to wirelessly teather his 6700 and use as a modem it is really cool. However, I do know for a fact that not all devices are "unlocked" to be used as a modem. Not to suggest it cannot be done 😉

The $15 is because laptops will inevitably use more KB than a PDA. They are essentially upgrading you to the $59.99 unlimited data plan for a PC card EV/DO modem. You might not like the price, but it is at least consistent.

The only reason to use 1xRTT is if you are in a marginal reception area for EV/DO. Then turning off EV/DO can save a lot of battery life. I don't know if the Q has the ability to force use of 1x. The Treo 700w does have it: dial #*#3836 (that's EVDO) and you get a check box to force 1x. I hope the Q will have some similar ability. By comparison, you can do it on the RAZR V3c, but it is a keystroke procedure akin to open heart surgery as phones go. So let's hope there is an easy shortcut like with the Treo.

Will the $59.99 unlimited data plan work on the Q? I would like to keep my RAZR which has Broadband Access and just switch ESN's on the weekends.

That would give me email during the week, and a better phone choice for the weekends and holidays.

Dear [name removed],

Thank you for contacting our Verizon Wireless website. We are happy to assist you with your question in regards to the Motorola Q and its features.

I would like apologize for any incomplete or misleading information that you have received thus far. Unfortunately at this point the Motorola Q will not be able to used as a modem at release. At this time we are unable to give an exact release date of that feature. If and when the feature is released, there will be service charge in addition to your monthly data service. More information will be available upon release of the feature. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and hope this does not discourage you from our data services.

If you have further questions...

You can use it as a modem - I use my Treo 700w - There is a software call Junfabrics that enables you to use it the EVDO service through the sync cable or bluetooth - I can tell you it works great and it is compatable with the Q. email me if you have any questions - [email protected]
