solution to selective contact sync problem
there was a few threads of problems where the sync takes all contacts-- have 100's in the outlook business but dont want them all on the phone. if you go to the push synch setup webpage and log in under your account (https://www31.wirelesssync.vzw.com) there is an option where you can choose to synch only contact from certain categories

Also - for those users not using exchange server sync (only using active sync via USB or BT) - you can sidestep this as well.
Just make sub-folders under your main "contacts" folder. The sync process only takes the contacts in the root "contacts" directory - not the sub-folders.
