The music is very choppy untile the backlight goes off. if i try to play a wmv file it is too choppy to even watch like the lag you get when you are using a web cam. is this a defective phone? software? or just crappy phone?

what resolution & bitrate/quality are you using?
Try to reencode the media to a lower setting and see if there's a difference.

You can also switch to TCPMP to play audio and video and use Divx video files encoded w/ LATHE or PocketDivxEncoder
I use MediaMonkey free to reencode all my files to Ogg Vorbis format @ 0 quality. I get decent sounding audio files @ ~1MB per song.

I've been doing the above for quite awhile on my Ipaq with great results. Problem w/ the Q it does have less memory and slower CPU so even some of my Divx movies have A/V sync issues - video quality is still very good though.

Remember that playing higher bitrate/quality files will many times force the phone to use up more juice to decode so your battery life AND...

mediamonkey is for audio stuff. Google for Lathe by omniquiti and PocketDivxEncoder which is the older (free) and still usable version.

TCPMP will allow you to reassociate media extensions so avi,mpg,ogg,mp3,etc. can be selected and played automatically through TCPMP. ALternately you can browse to those media folders on your storage card w/ TCPMP and select and play from there.

BTW the speaker on this thing is awesome - much louder than my Ipaq and about as loud if not louder than my Nokia N90.

We used my wife's Q to play Madagascar for my kids while we waited for the previews to start before watching Pixar's Cars today. All the other kids in the seats around us kept turning around when they recognized the audio was Madagascar and I was impressed that this thing was loud enough to be heard a few rows away with all the bustling kids and pre-preview commercials.

I usually keep a few of my kids shows & dvd's on my PDA to keep them occupied/distracted when they get a bit rambunctious - my wife is glad that she finally has one of her own to do this without bugging me for my PDA/phone.

its cool - we all started somewhere.

TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) is a program you can install on your Q that will play video and audio. Use it in place of media player. It does have a facility to "fit to screen" upon playback or choose from many zoom size, but remember it will look bad the more you upscale.

There are many forums just like this one regarding video conversion if you just google you can find the answers you seek already explained in better detail than I can give you.
There is a forum at this site: www.divx.com
