"Reminders" in the middle of the night! - help

So - I think I know how to work this phone pretty well, and I've been able to find a workaround for most things that don't work as you'd expect - but this one is kinda bugging me.

I have a lot of items in my calendar which I've scheduled as "all day events". Basically - people's birthdays, things I need to remember to do in a day - but not at a certain time, etc. Basically - anything I put in my calendar that doesn't actually have a certain "time" - I put in as an "all day event"

I've noticed two bad things about the all day events.

1. They don't seem to appear on my home screen under the schedule section (whereas appointments with specific times do appear)

2. My only options for "reminders" for these events are in minute...

I plug a headphone into the jack when I go to bed. This way I will still hear the phone ring if an important call comes in, but won't hear the system sounds as they go into the headset.

It's 'low-tech' but it works for me.
