a good acid test is to ask yourself 'does this program access or show me data that is not aready in my phone?' Any messenger program will be going outside the device to connect to a server for instant messaging and/or email and thus it uses the carrier network to transmit data between that server and your device.
compare that to, say, the camera program in the Q. open the cam, snap a few shots, and save them in the device. download the images to your pc via the data cable. did any of this access data over the wireless network that was not already in the device? No. Thus you have no worries about data.
Your messenger software... thats another story. be careful. beter yet, get the data plan.
