Will Cingular Cripple the W810i...

My wife just upgraded to the V3m on Verizon, and I was sort of excited because it was a new toy to play with...yeah, didn't last long.

They market it as a music phone, but only if you buy optional accessories like an SD-micro card ($100 for 1GB), a USB cable and 2.5mm headphones. Out of the box, you can't even get ringtones to it without having to "trick" it (you have to rename an .mp3 to a .mid or .qcp, then send it as a piture mail to yourself. Has to be less than 325 Kb and it has to be the third Teusday of the month at exactly 3:23 pm.)

I knew Verizon crippled the bluetooth for file transfers, but I thought you could still PIM sync...nope. I couldn't help but laugh at my wife as she manually transferred all her numbers to her ne...

They have crippled the LG C300, ala Verizon. But like you, I bought my w810 unlocked. And couldn't be happier with it.

Well not doubting you on that (good old Tex said I made an ignorant statement, he is lucky he can hide behind an internet keyboard and say that......) but if LG's and Cingular's relationship is that way, why didnt they cripple it on every LG phone. Or why didnt Cingular cripple it on LG phone. Either way, it doesnt make sense. And if a phone supports a bluetooth profile, why wouldnt it support them all? Either way, I would never personally own that phone and probably no LG period.

they did with the exception of the lg cu 500. however, it is crippled in a since because the have data cables for the phone but again no software from lg to transfer data to the device.

i think a phone that high in class wouldnt be dumbed down or nobody would buy it.

I really doubt that this phone will be crippled. One of the main reasons Vzw cripples their phone is due to their BREW bs. Cingular uses GSM (we don't use BREW)
I expect this phone to be just like any other SE walkman phone. AWESOME!!! I can't wait to put my hands on this bad boy. 🤤

Well, the Cingular W810 is out and it does in fact look like they disabled, i.e. crippled, some features. From what I've read so far, here is a list, please add and/or correct any mistakes:

1. Can't us high quality, full length MP3s as ringtones.

2. Can't do OTA firmware update.

All things considered (especially price w/ new 2 year), not bad, but still makes me mildly happy I bought the unlocked version, despite how much I overpaid.

But I do not use all 3 of those feature [used to with my 8125 but got tired of it.] And to me, the only downfall is the 128 mb Memory Stick vs. the 512. Even I just switched out with the 2 gb from my PSP that has my music own it so there we go for me.

You wouldn't use the firmware update feature? To me that's the most important disabled feature.

Guess you could just do a warranty exchange when new FW comes out...Of course you could also get a new car when you need an oil change. I just don't get why carriers diable that feature.

Or call Cingular switch to the update setting in the phone and have them send me a firmware update. Boom same thing; happen the other day.
