Speed Dial Isn't Working When I hold Down a Number Key

I set 8 contacts to the speed dial positions 2-9 but when I hold the button from the home screen, it brings up contacts from the Address Book. For example, if I hold the [5] key, it shows the 1st contact that begins with the letter 'j'

It should dial whoever I placed in the particular speed dial position right?

Also, why is the speed dial position 1 available? That's supposed to be reserved for voicemail only.

I ran into this same problem and finally broke down and looked in the manual. For some reason, SE wants us to memorize the contacts listed for each position because you have to press the number on the keypad then press the "call" softkey to initiate the call. Very weird considering I can press and hold "1" and it calls my voicemail. I'm not sure if you have the Cingular version or not but mine is unlocked/unbranded and I can't find any other options for the press and hold technique.
