Front Screen

Will later versions of software ever make it possible to read text messages on the front screen?

Any thoughts, especially from tech-savy folks, would be appreciated.

could this front screen problem with text be because they changed to OLED to save on the battery. Is this screen not capable of text and such on it??

I believe that is the reason. Unfortunately, I have heard that this type of screen would not be cable of viewing text on the front screen.

Does that mean that caller ID is not displayed on the outer screen when a call is incoming?

No, the caller ID is definitely displayed on the outer screen. But you cannot click "view" on the outer screen to view text messages.

bkw79,

I've been reading the posts here for a week or so now while I'm trying to decide if I want to use my NE2 upgrade on the 8300. Your posts have all been very informative. Thank you for your response and for all of your helpful posts!

You can change the front screen's clock to digital to enlarge it, but they make it small under the "minimize" setting to allow you to see more of the screen. And it goes completely dark to conserve battery usage when you are not using it. However, you can change the time setting to make it stay on for 5, 15 or 30 seconds. They are giving us plenty of options and choses with this phone. It seems to be a great phone to me. 😎

I think it has to do with the small size of the screen and it the text being jagged.

the screen is about the same size as the 8100 and I can read the text just fine on it. I have played with 8300 and the screen quality on the outside is much worse than the 8100 and thats why you can't read text on the outside. I'm not sure that software would correct that. It's probably something they are just going to have fix on a the next model.

i think they cut a few corners to save$ is my belief. The cost on the 8300 is about 60 less than the cost of the 8100. As far as the quality of the outside display goes i would think it is still good enough to display text. Some companies overseas are starting to use oled displays as the main display, i am sure the resolution is higher, but if they are using them as the main display that gives us a little bit of hope that a software update could add this feature, I just wouldn't hold your breath 😢

I think in one of the reviews I read they said the front screen was OLED to save battery juice.

They probably thought it was necessary due to the animated wallpapers and flash ui.

yes that is true it uses less juice thus saving battery, but i think it would still be possible to read text on it, just doubt it will happen, you never know for sure though

LMFAO 🤣 🤣 🤣

You guys think the type of screen means you cant read text???

Ok it shows caller id, mp3 text, time and date....... then it can show text msg/missed calls. If it is a color screen you can show whatever color pixels on the screen itself.
They can make it read text, just that they had to push this phone due to short supply on the lg8100. I'm pretty sure they will make a software update in about 3 months w/ this fix.

Built from OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology, the external screen does not require a backlight to function. Drawing far less power than traditional LCD technology, the downside of OLED screens is washed out color in direct sunlight.

Displaying 65K-colors, the 96 x 96 px screen conveniently shows frequented information such as battery charge level, signal strength, date, and time for up to 6 lines of text. The external screen also doubles as a viewfinder when closed in Camera Mode, but unfortunately is incapable of displaying text.

From a review I read, it said that because they used the organic LED, viewing text on the outside is completely impossible. However, this is only a report, so don't take my word for it. Also, because its an organic display, the sun basically makes it impossible to see in its full light.
