Turning Off EV-DO To Extend Battery Life

I found the following on another phone review site. Can anyone corroborate or negate it? I don't often need EV-DO...

"I just found this out the other day when browsing the hidden service menu - you can set your phone to receive Digital Only Hybrid, Digital Only Non Hybrid, HDR Only, or 1X Only.

To get to this setting you have to go to the menu (press OK at main screen)>press 0 seven times>go to network select (3)>Mode Preference (1)> then you can select the options...

Digital Only Hybrid - 1X Digital & EVDO
Digital Only Non Hybrid - EVDO only "Not supported' (when trying to make a call)
HDR Only - EVDO (?) - "Voice mode not available"
1X Only - 1X Digital (only voice?)

Picking 1X gives you bigger signal bars and I assume...

I've been wondering this myself. I have the Motorola E815 (still within 15 day period) and I get 24 hours if I am lucky on my battery. I charge this phone daily with very light use. I talked to a Verizon tech about turning off the EVDO signal and he said it should have no effect on the battery life. I am considering an exchange for the 8300 but unsure at this point since I have been reading about the earpiece volume problem.
