Newbie Helps for the 8300
Being somewhat of a newbie, I've been cobbling together some helps and shortcuts for this great cell phone.
I will post them here and I encourage others to add theirs in subsequent posts. Then in a week or so we can put them all together and make a great and quick read for the phone and maybe help some people just getting it. (I think this is called a "Sticky" on some forums...)

Step by step to enable mp3: Two part process.
To enable outside phone buttons to play mp3:
From main screen press OK and then the number 0 seven times (you’ll see a series of question marks disappear). Then scroll all the way down and press #11 (Music Setting). Finally, choose My mp3.
To get MP3s to play, including ringtones – Press OK (Menu) and go to Settings and Tools, press 5 (phone settings), press 2 (shortcut key), press 5 (play key), and choose my mp3s.
To make ringtones:
Here's a program to easily make ringtones, Audacity, which is compatible for both Mac and Windows. And it's small and free.

And to save your audio to MP3, you'll need to download a small, free program, which then works in tandem with Audacity. (Once loaded, Audacity will locate lamelib and use it...)

It works beautifully. It's also pretty easy to learn and use.
Here's a step-by-step to make ringtones for your 8300:
I drag the song to my desktop, open Audacity and choose File and Open, and select the song (I have the song file in AIFF). I then use the selection tool (top left corner, looks like a capital "I") to select the portion of the song I want, or I put the cursor where I want the portion to end and go to Edit, Select, and choose one of the options. I then go to File and Export Selection As MP3. I save it to my desktop. (By the way, I often increase the volume of these ringtones. Find the slider next to the small speaker emblem at the top left and move it to the right. I set them to 6 or 7, depending upon the original audio quality.)
I then open my email program (Entourage - Mac) and attach the file and send it to my tendigitcellnumber@vzwpix.com
Remember to keep the file size to less than 350kb. When it arrives to your phone, open it and it will begin playing. Choose Options (right softkey) and save it.
Oh, and unless you have one of those text messaging deals with Verizon, I think sending them costs .25 or something.
Talking Ringtones:
When receiving a call, you can enable your 8300 to first announce who it is that’s calling (if you have their information in your phone) and then to play the assigned ring tone.
Do the following:
Press OK (Menu), and go to SETTINGS & TOOLS. Press #2 (Tools), and then press #1 (Voice Commands). Then on the right softkey, chose Settings, and press 5. (Call Alert). Finally, choose Name + Ring
Ear Piece Volume changes:
For those experiencing earpiece volume issues, the 8300 is set to Voice Privacy, a feature which decreases the volume when you move your ear away from the phone. Intended to keep those near you from listening to the other person on your phone, you may want to play with this feature to optimize your call quality.
Press OK (Menu) and go to SETTINGS & TOOLS. Next, press #6 (Call Settings), and then press #5 (Voice Privacy). Choose "Off."
How to assign ringtones, remove ringtones, etc.:
Press OK (Menu), and go to GET IT NOW. Choose #1 (Get Tunes & Tones), and press #3 (My Ringtones). Scroll to your ringtones and to erase one, press the right softkey (Options). To set a ringtone as someone’s ringtone, press the left softkey (Set As). You may select either of three choices: Ringtone (your phone will play this when receiving a call unless you’ve chosen a specific ringer for a person), Contact ID (from here you may assign specific tones for specific people in your address book), and Alert Sounds (you may choose a ringtone for specific alerts).
How to record a voice memo (& make it a ringtone), &/or record a conversation:
With the phone open, push in the button on the left side for voice commands and hold it for a few seconds. You will see Press OK to start recording. You will find your recording under My Sounds (GET IT NOW, Tunes & Tones). You can also do this while on the telephone, but it only picks up the person on the other end.
You may also save the memo as a ringtone by sending it to your cell phone and saving it as a ringtone.
How to turn on the flash:
When you open the phone, press the camera key on the right side. On the screen, you will see a Lightning Bolt on the bottom left. If it is grayed-out, the flash is off. If it is yellow, the flash is on. Right under the volume buttons there is a Flash Button on the left site. If you press it, the lightning bolt should turn to yellow. The flash is now on.
How to use the 4x digital zoom on VX8300:
The 8300 has a 4X zoom which can be used with still or video. To use it with still photography, the resolution must first be reduced below 1280X960. Why that is I can’t say. But once you bump it down, you can zoom. You may zoom while in still or video mode by pressing the right or left buttons on the center wheel.

Just to let you know I tried that - turned the voice privacy to "off" and on my very next call I had a bad echo situation when I spoke. Turned it back on and haven't had the echo problem since!

You are correct. Voice privacy has nothing to do with earpiece volume. It has something to do with encription of the digital voice signal with CDMA so that someone cannot intercept your call. I tried to find more details, but no luck so far. By the way The Rever, nice job.

How to make a conference call:
It doesn't matter whether you initiated a call or received the call, but when you are already on the line with someone, simply dial a third persons # and press SEND and their phone will ring. When the third party picks up (or their answering machine or Voice-Mail picks up) simply press SEND a second time to get the original party back in the conversation, too.
If you don't have the third party's # memorized and they're in your cell's phone book (or they were a recent call), simply press "Options" (upper right soft key) and then chose CONTACTS or RECENT CALLS. Find the # you want and press SEND. When they pick up, press SEND a second time to bring in the...

Using the camera/video without opening the phone:
With the phone closed, press and hold the camera button until you see the camera mode come on. You may take a picture (which the camera will automatically save to your MY PIX file), or you may hold the camera button down again, which will put it into video mode. It will save your video to the MY FLIX file.
How to get pictures and/or video from your phone to your computer without using a cable or Bitpim:
As I do not have a cable or Bitpim, I send pictures and video from my phone to my email address, thereby getting them to my computer.

I haven't read the manual closely for this phone, but this is good information to have. And, even tho the front screens quality isn't that great normally, it becomes just like the inside screen for taking pictures. Thanks for the tip!

Rename each song so the first few letters are an indication of the album the song is on. For instance, a song "battlefield" on the cd album "Bring Us Back" would read as filename "bub_battlefield". All succeeding songs on the album will begin with "bub_". This will at least keep all the songs grouped together with their own albums. You still have to click through them, but the songs individually aren't all over the map, if you know what I mean.
It's a tedious task, so to quicken it up, copy the "bub_" (without quotes, of course) and hit ctrl-v after F2ing every file and clicking the beginning of the title so not to lose the title itself.

To extend battery life:
Because I do not need EV-DO, I turned it off, which prevents the phone from searching for that signal. I believe that saves on battery life.
To do this, go to the menu (press OK at main screen), press 0 seven times, go to Network Select (3), Mode Preference (1), then you can select 1x only.

You can set up the phone so the pictures, movies, and sounds go straight to the card instead of the phone's memory:
Tools and settings>>>Memory (# eight)>>>Save options (#1)>>>Select each entry individually (pix, flix, and sounds) and select "card memory" and hit ok.
This gives you lots of room to make longer movies. To set the phone to allow longer movies:
Open the movie (click the right side button twice with cover open) and select the right soft key to select options. Setting #3 (time limit) allows you to select "available memory" so you can use as much as 1gb of time, if needed.

So, you are saying that we shouldn't "deep discharge" our phones very often, but that we should do it from time to time just to keep our battery meter accurate? Or should we never do it?
