Not to savvy on this. Can somebody please tell me, if you buy an unlocked CDMA or GSM phone, don't you still have to use a service provider such as VZW or Sprint or Cingular to use it?

you can buy an unlocked gsm phone, but must subscibe to a gsm provider for service. I don't believe you can buy an unlocked cdma phone, because only phones sold by their respective company will work on their networks (software is locked to only enable activation on the network that sold the phone). If you decide on an unlocked gsm phone, you may be able to obtain service without a contract, but be warned their data service may not be available with this phone, because it does not contain their software, so you will most likely only be able to make and recieve calls on their network, texting may or may not work, and downloading anything, may be impossible, and you will be completely on your own as far as support for your phone.
