My enVious Music Exprience So Far
VCast Music is amazing, considering they're trying to cram the iTunes experience into a tiny screen. On my Samsung, I was undewhelmed by the effort. On the enV, with full keyboard, spiffy vibrant screen and stereo speakers, I now see what the hype is about. Too bad they chose WMA. I get blueballs thinking about how much better the music experience would be if I could just sync the phone to my iTunes. If I can watch Finding Nemo on my handset, why not my latest episode of BattleStar Galactica?! I've seen the Cingular experience with iTunes, it misses the mark as much as Verizon did with Windows Media. And, because I'm an OSX user, I can't use VCast Music on my computer because it requires Windows Media Player 10, we only have ver 9, and I'm not very impressed with that either. My old tMobile Moto phone would work very nicely with my iTunes. You just tether the handset to the computer USB, and the memory card popped up as if it were just another playlist in my iTunes. That was back in vers 6, I hear there are probs with iTunes7.
While this won't replace my shelf system, it does replace my iPod to a degree. Built-in stereo speakers - NIIIIICE! So now I can use it as an iPod and jog around with my favorite tunes on my 1GB card, or flip it open and get some ambient tunes whenever I'm in the mood. Not Bose-quality sound, but a practical solution to not having a boom box in that particular room. I probably won't ever get around to bt stereo headphones, but it's a nice fantasy to have. It's not an iPod killer, but it's a nice alternative to leaving the dedicated MP3 player at home when you don't want to carry around another device on you.
BTW, fellow Mac-Addicts, have you noticed also that when you xfer files onto the micro-sd card, that extra copes of the files preceding with "_" are generated? They are unplayable and must be deleted to avoid errors with the player. Sux, but I don't transfer music on a regular basis. This minor chore is still better than that code hack for the A930.
NOW that I know how to get my own MP3 ringtones to work by SMSing myself, I can erase one black mark againt the VX9900. I was pissed when I couldn't get my own audio to function as ringtones, esp. since it was (ironically) painless to do on the Samsung. But now, I can bump my own ringtones, whether they're major chart-busters or local favorites (thanx 2 Didleysquat for creating music that rocks as ringtones).
I still have a few miffs. I can't get the music player to remember the last song played if I have to do something else with the phone. I miss my album artwork - at least give us a visualizer! My Moto had one, crappy at that, but it was offered. An easier way to add your own ringtones would be worth 1/2 a star.
And as far as album art. You just have to do a bit of working with the ID3 tags in WMP10 on the .wma's and the art will show.
Not sure how you can sort this out being a Mac user, but if you add the album art on a windows machine, you can just drop the .wma's into your sounds folder using your mac and you should see the album art.
As far as the music not remembering what track you were on, that's just a function of the music player after you exit it. It will resume playing if interrupted by a call or SMS, but not if you exit the player.
Hope this helps. 🙂
