Confessions of a Former Verizon Rep...

I don't agree with him on the first point though. Seems like NE2 on top of the better 2-yr phone pricing makes 2-yr contracts worth considering.
Where you'd get screwed is going from a 1-yr contract to a 2 yr. No NE2, and if your contract is too low, no annual upgrade either. ☹️

hey can you cut and paste, i can't open that☹️
No prob :
A former Verizon sales rep, let's call him Steve, wrote to us recently offering insider advice to all Consumerist readers. We were excited because by knowing how the sales force at Verizon are compensated, consumers can get an edge when haggling over a new phone. What? Haggling!? Over a phone!? Yes, even you can do it. Verizon Steve confesses all he knows, from the simple to the sublime...:
• Never get a 2-year contract. "The only benefit to a 2 yr contract is a $50 savings on your phone. Its not worth it. Take the $50 and get a 1 year then you can upgrade to a new phone every 10 months."
• Verizon reps get tons ...

...unless you have a habit of leaving your phone in your pocket and washing them in the laundry...then it becomes a $50 lifesaver.
No, I would never personally insure anything south of a PDA. I've had 4-5 phones over 4 years and never had anything die on me (I'm just an early adopter), but the problem within insurance is that it's a flat rate and a flat deductible - i.e., insuring a Samsung U340 or Nokia 2366i costs the same as insuring a XV6800, i760, or Treo 755.
When I'm selling insurance, I always break it down for the customer by calculating 20 months of insurance payments ($119.80 for TEC, $99.80 for WPP) and adding the $50 deductible, then dividing that by the phone's retail cost. Verdict?
If you get it on a Nokia 2366i (retail $129.99), you're effectively betting that you'll return the phone twi...

This guy is an idiot.
He may be, but just saying he is doesn't say much.
How, specifically, is he an idiot? 🙂
I won't change the price on a phone regardless of how many accessories or text packages you get. It's not worth it to put my job at risk.
The lost or stolen program that he mentions suggests fraud.
Insurance is not a ripoff. Let's say you replace your phone twice in two years (not unusual). You could take the insurance which would be (50x2) + (5x24) = 220. Or you could purchase two new phones at full retail would could easily be over $400. Depends on the phone you get.
Do they even offer a $100 data package for t...

Two year contracts are worth it if you know to get the huge discount on your phone, sell it a year later, get a different phone at full retail, then get your NE2 discount again the following year. Rinse and repeat.

Yes, lost/stolen suggests fraud. No, we won't change the prices of phones/accessories (without a good reason, and then there are well-defined limits to what we can do under different situations), and plans/data are completely out of the question.
That said, policy used to be much looser, and reps would give away full accessory combos in order to close high-paying plans. My supervisor has been a RSR for Frontier Cellular/VZW since 2000, and he tells us about the things they used to do regularly fairly often, such as take a few dozen phones out of the store location, go set up at another place of business (that offered an employ...

I remember seeing this a year or two ago. It's been floating around for a while. It's depressing that it's still around because it means that people are reading it and getting the wrong idea on how the system works.
This is so old. This was posted forever ago. I worked with Verizon Wireless for 3 years and just recently left the company. The majority of the stuff in there is false...unless you have a NEW confession to post...I'm not impressed.
I love it how he say to never sign a 2yr contract and then says to take advantage of the 25% off for lost/stolen. If you do this it extends your contract 2 years. These are the people that make prices higher for everyone else. They cheat the system and jack up prices.
what an idiot!!!
