I have asked this question before but want confimation.
I am currently in an Alltel area that will soon be switching to Verizon. My current contract is up with Alltel, so I want to upgrade to a smartphone. The problem that I have is I don't like any of the Alltel smartphones. I do however, like the Samsung smartphones that Verizon has. Is there anyway I can get a Verizon smartphone now while I am still with Alltel?

cwcanty has it right. They need to test your cell number to be sure it's not one the company is going to have to divest later in the year. Where they pull up the Altell transition verification will tell them what they need to tell you about switching.

Since you are out of contract with Alltel you can switch to VZW at anytime and from what you said you arleady know that you are going to be a VZW customer and not in the Divested market (not sure on the wording). If you switch before the merger or transition to VZW then you will be subject to a credit check. I would probably recommend to wait (if you can) until it's completed and you will probably be eligible for a little more of a discount on a new phone instead of the new customer pricing since you are an Alltel customer. I don't know that for sure, but that's what I have always seen with mergers.

If they're in a divested market the likelihood of the number porting over is low. In our nearest Alltel market we've never been able to port those numbers over because the mobile numbers are outside of our market. Now, that same Alltel market is going to be divested, and right now I couldn't port their number over no matter how hard I tried. I'd have to give them a completely new number local to me but long distance for them.
Just because the number's out of contract doesn't mean you can port the number. A rep would check the Local Number Portability tool and find that the number was unportable. I've seen it many times.
