RadioShack Warranty

Is the RadioShack warrenty as good as the $4.99 a month warranty from Verizon? I'm thinking even with a NE2 and the $4.99 a month warranty RadioShack is cheaper.

$150 for a v710 with rebate and NE2
add $4.99 a month for 2 year warranty = $119.76 (plus tax I assume)

That's $20 or more cheaper at RadioShack (over 2 years)?

Any disadvantages? Does the RadioShack leave something out or harder to get your phone fixed/replaced?

Thanks all.

Let's not count pennies... I'm buying 2 phones

Verizon
Phone $320 with 2 year contract
$70 rebate = $250
NE2 discount get 1 phone for $150
Second phone for $250
$5/month warranty for 2 years, 2 phones = $240
Total price with warranty for 2 phones = $640

RadioShack
Phone $320 with 2 year contract
$70 rebate = $250
2 phones $500
Warranty for 2 years = $100
Total price with warranty = $600

I save $40. So how does the RadioShack warranty compare with the Verizon warranty?

Thanks for your help.

RadioShack is an extended manufactures warranty that also covers batteries and any accessories that you buy with the phones.

VZW is insurance if you are going to loose the phone.

Not quite, VZW for $4.99 is Insurance + Extended Warranty. VZW for $3.99 is Insurance Only and $1.99 is Extended Warranty. Total Equipment Protection is both for $4.99. The Extended Warranty is pointless since anyone who uses a Platinum or Gold MasterCard/Visa/Discover/AMEX will have the credit card provide free extended warranty anyways for atleast 1+ year in addition to the 1 year manufacturers warranty anyways.

Well, yeah, RS appears to be cheaper but what exactly is covered under their plan?

The $4.99 per month Verizon charges is for TOTAL EQUIPMENT COVERAGE. It's not your typical extended warranty that covers manufacturer defects beyond the regular warranty period. It also covers lost, stolen, or damaged phones.

I'm assuming with the RS warranty you'll need to bring them something to repair and, obviously, that's not possible if you lost your phone or it was stolen. Further, you might be in for a rough time if your phone malfunctions and there is evidence that the malfunction was caused by misuse, abuse, etc.

Yep, forgot about that. Guess I'll have to wait.. I was just trying to convince myself I could buy it now and save money. 😉 But if I do get the insurance from Verizon I'm covered if it gets lost or stolen so I'll go that way.

Thanks

Not the same. The Radio Shack warranty is a Extended Service Protection Plan. If you use a Gold or higher level credit card, you're already covered by the credit card company since they always give a extension of 1 year or more above the warranty that comes with the product. Verizon Wireless's Total Equipment Protection is really two things. Insurance for lost/stolen/damage + Extended Warranty in one package. VZW sells the Insurance for $3.99 and the Extended Warranty for $1.99 separately so the Total Equipment Protection is just a bundled package to save $1 a month.
