I know you would like to take it off to save battery, but you get advantages with EVDO even without Vcast. I find I get better connections and faster Get it now downloading with EvDo!
Anyhoo, how much battery do you need to save? I keep my phone on from 7 am till 1 at night and I use it to watch movies and listen to mp3's all day and I still have 50% left with a standard battery (and evdo is on)!
