Cingular claims emoticon patent
Posted Jan 26th 2006 3:21PM by Marc Perton
Filed under: Cellphones

The next time you try typing an emoticon on your cellphone, be prepared to pay Cingular a royalty. Well, probably not. But companies that develop software or hardware to display smileys (i.e., via dedicated keys or macros) may find themselves in Cingular's crosshairs now that the US Patent and Trademark Office has granted the company a patent for using a "mobile phone (or other device) to select a displayable icon, such as an emoticon, that indicates the mood or emotion of the user or conveys other information independent of text." We're not sure how Cingular pulled...

Memory Upgrade HP HW6515A

All,
I posted this in the HW6515 forum. That's NOT a very active forum as far as posting/etc. thus I thought I'd post it here and see if anyone with REAL knowledge might think/know what Cingular plans to do, if anything. Jim

Re: Memory upgrade for the HP 6515!
by property33 Today, 8:06 AM

I notice both Cingular AND HP now list the 6515 as having 128 megs of RAM, apparently they've reacted to the issues. I wonder WHAT/IF there are any provisions for people who already have the 64 meg versions. I've already ordered the upgrade mentioned by Archie but may try to get an answer from Cingular (yeah, right) before I ship it to the guy Archie talks about. Jim

Cingular & Treo 700w

I really really want one of these devices. I am not switching off my GSM network to gain one either. I just bought a Siemens SX 66 two months ago and I have had a Treo 650, Blackberry, and many symbian OS phones. I am ecstatic about Palm's case and layout having Windows 5.0 software. I generally purchase a new phone every three to six months. I do believe if/when I acquire one of these I will not be switching for a while according to the reviews and features.

Does anyone have any insight/information/encouragement as to when this phone will be available on/for Cingular's network?

Thanks in advance!

Blackberry question

Somebody that knows for sure how to do this, I could use some help.

I have a manager's line from Cingular that I've been using a Blackberry on. I had my Blackberry account set up through the Web Client, but never got the actual BB feature added to the line. Now I'm turning the handset in for a PTT handset. I want to be able to sell the BB as used to a new customer, but my existing BB account has to be cancelled first. Does anyone know how to cancel an existing Blackberry email account? I assume it can be done through customer service, but is there any other way?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me! 😁

3G Phones still coming in January?

Well, we have one week left in January and still no signs of the Samsung zx10 or LG cu320, the two 3G phones slated for release this month.

Does anyone know if they are still coming in January or maybe when we might see them?

Yes folks, the RAZR is outdated.

At work, I'm always a little entertained by customer's that come in and drool over the RAZR like it's the latest and greatest phone to have possession of. Do people not realize how long that phone has been around? In "cell-phone-years" 2 years is a long time. In fact, the RAZR is THE oldest phone in our store. Every other phone we sell is newer than that one. Yes folks, even those ugly, chunky, open-faced Nokia phones you see on the "cheap-and-or-free" wall of the store are NEWER than that shiny flat one you think you'd look so awesome carrying! Sure, they've changed the color, but it's still a pretty old phone, all things considering. Not to mention everyone seems to have it now. But even more amusing to me is that now all of these other ca...

Bye bye ROKR!

Cingular finally got smart and got rid of that poor excuse for a phone:

No more ROKR?

Since December the Motorola ROKR E1 had been in short supply. It was originally believed to have been simply a supply shortage... akin to what iPoders frequently experience. We have significant reasons to believe however that the ROKR has been dropped from the Cingular line up. Some possible confirmation came today to calls and visits to several company-owned stores where the Cingular iTunes stand had been removed from the floor, leaving only the accessories in its absent shadow. Does this mean that it’s the end of the iTunes + Cingular relationship? Probably not, there is quite a bit invested in i

Answer Tones????

I had wondered when Cingular was going to have a feature like Verizon's Ringback Tones or T-Mobile's Caller Tunes. I was on the phone with tech support this morning and she mentioned Cingular has "Answer Tones" now. She told me to go to www.cingular.com/answertones... The page won't come up. Has anyone else heard of Answer tones?

Anyone know when the SE Z520 is coming back?

Hi,

I am out of contract with Cingular and would like to re-sign a contract and add new phones to my family talk plan. Just when I had decided on the Z520, it got pulled. I was wondering if anyone has an idea when the Z520 will be back in stores? Also -- any updates on the date for re-release of this phone with PTT? Thank you!

850 vs 1900 coverage map

Does Cingular have a map that shows coverage by frequency? Tmobile has one on their web site, it is mainly 1900 in urban and 850 rural. This seems logical, but don't know if it is the same for Cingular. I asked a store sales rep and got a blank stare.

Wow.

😳

DALLAS and SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless has announced that it invested about half a billion million dollars in its network in the Lone Star State during 2005, adding coverage and capacity via new cell sites, purchasing portable generators and back-up batteries, and by rolling out new data features. This local investment is part of Cingular's estimated $6.2 billion national network capital expenditure program during 2005.

Which carrier is best?

I'm currently with Verizon, but am sick of them on many levels. However, I've heard that they are the best for plans and coverage and call quality. I would like any feedback any of you who are knowledgeable and familiar w/ both Cingular and VZW to provide any feedback you may have.

Thanks!!
