Upgrades and ETF

I had a friend who recently upgraded their service from a motorola v60 i to a samsung P 107 to start a family share plan and the store made him pay an ETF fee plus sign a new 2 yr contract. Is this standard policy or did he get taken. AWS allows customers who are migrating service to do so without any sort of penalty. Especially not any ETF fees.

Edge vs tethered?

What is the advantage of Edge over just using a notebook to dial up. Im not one to try to use the internet on the small phone screens or pay a premium for such. But I would like a usb/Laptop connection even if a tad slower.

I may not understand the Edge technology or even GPRS for that matter as I do not currently have any mobile internet service. the reason IM asking is becasue Im thinking of going with Cingular on a V400 and the V450 will have "Edge" technology.

Should I get a free phone and buy the V450 later this or next year?

New Billing Problem (when calling "Tell Me" while roaming, it gets charged as 411")

a few weeks ago my parents bill came, and they were billed for 6 calls to 411 while roaming in Buffalo ($1.29 per call), he called and said that he never made such calls, so they gave him a one time credit, (and told him that next time it would not be waived)

he then relized afterwards (by looking on his phone, which stores under dialed calls on his phone, a list of times under that phone number) that those calls were indeed dialed at those times, but to a different number 800-555-8355 "Tell Me" (for those who dont know, its a free service with news stocks quotes etc.. http://news.com.com/2100-1033-243519.html?leg acy=cnet AT&T has it as #121 with more options)

I just got to see my bill today (online) and I was billed for 4 calls to 411...

Yikes...cingular is releasing all thier assets in the west?

"With Cingular Wireless about to be the proud owner of AT&T Wireless, questions have been surfacing as to what will happen to its existing network infrastructure pact with T-Mobile USA. Well, a decision has been made: T-Mobile USA's parent Deutsche Telekom will snap up the California and Nevada network assets in a $2.5 billion deal, which will unwind the joint venture".

Does this mean in Nevada will be stuck with ATT's poor GSM coverage? I read this and it seems Cingular is releasing all their west coast assets becasue they will have ATT's which are not uite built out as well. ATT was late to the GSM game and does not appear to have the coverge on GSM as even T Mobile.

The only issue with the T637

Is that damn headphone jack on the bottom. Sony really believes in the proprietary crap! ATRAC on their music players , They just stopped treoing..

Why can't they have a 2.5 mm jack on the top of the phone where it belongs........This really gets mt goat about Sony...Hello it's NOT a better technological idea to have to use a special and huge connector on the bottom of the phone to hear with...

Oh it has Bluetooth? nevermind!!!

Questions re Cingular

Am porting from ATT and looking at carriers. Mostly Verizon and Cingular now. I don't want to get into the CDMA vs GSM area as I have done my homework there. Both are equally viable for North American mobile phone use and CDMA gets the nod for being ahead of the game in the G3 arena right now. ( A major expense for GSM to upgrade and Edge is not as good as ED-VO)

I have a couple of questions. Las Vegas home area. Im speaking of Cingular today. Not after the Att deal. In fact the ATT deal is what is actually sending me to Verizon.

ATT's TDMA network is very spotty and their GSM is terrible in Las Vegas as well as their CS. I don't want to sign a contract ending up with the service of a company I am leaving after 8 years! The fact that...

Cingular vs. Sprint

I am trying to get opinions for which is better. I currently have SPCS and have been with them for 5 years. I can see advantages to staying and leaving. I am trying to find out if the service is any better with Cingular or not. Sprint isn't bad, but I am here in San Antonio and I travel around Texas, so Cingular would offer more coverage area. What are your impressions of Cingular, its service, its customer service, etc. Any comments are helpful. If I go to Cingular, I am going to get the Motorola V400s. Anyone have anything on those? Thanks!

rf and sound quality comparos

i currently have a nokia 3595. it has the best rf and sound quality i have ever experienced with any cell phone but i like gadgets and this phone has a small crappy color screen and barely has poly ringers (only 4 chords). i want a phone with at least a vga camera, 128*160 65k tft screen and 24chord polys. form factor doesnt matter. i dont want to sacrifice rf and sound quality which is my reason for this post. which gadget phone can perform for it supposed main purpose (phone calls)? my friend who used to have a 3595 also said the v400 isnt as good. what should i get? i have been thinkin about a v600. any ideas??? any help is appreciated

Can I get 850 coverage in California?

Is there anyway to program a triband(850,1800,1900) GSM phone to get 850 coverage in California? It's kind of unfair that AT&T gets to roam off Cingular in California, but not visversa. I know that if the merger goes through, this will happen. Does anyone know how long that might take? Thanks for your help.
