LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Alltel Corp.'s chief executive says the wireless company will continue to pursue its strategy of growing in rural markets, even though it will be carrying a tremendous debt load to finance its $24.7 billion buyout by two private investment firms.

A day after Alltel announced that TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners would buy the company for $71.50 per share, Alltel CEO Scott Ford said Monday that the company will still be able to grow. He noted that it has nearly completed a $3 billion share repurchase program, has been paying regular dividends and has been spending on capital improvements.

The added debt service -- estimated at $23 billion -- won't hinder the company when the other expenses are stripped away...

A pair of investment firms have agreed to acquire Alltel Corp., the fifth-biggest U.S. wireless company and owner of the nation's largest geographic network, in a deal worth $24.8 billion.

The telecommunications company announced Sunday that it had signed an agreement to be acquired by TPG Capital, formerly Texas Pacific Group, and GS Capital Partners, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs. The investors also agreed to take on Alltel's $2.7 billion in debt.

"This transaction delivers substantial and certain value to our shareholders while providing the company with long-term partners who share our commitment to our customers, employees and the communities we serve," Scott Ford, Alltel's chief executive, said in a news release.

My 6235i is having issues with the icons on the menu disappearing so I called in to get a repalcement sent to me. The guy was so dumb he kept saying ok so you have a Nokia 3587 and I was like NO IDIOT i have a 6235 and so the replacement phone came today and guess what it was....? A nokia 3587.... a crappy 3 yr old phone. So I called in and now they have to send me another phone and then I sent back the wrong phone but seriously how stupid can you be to get those two phones confused!?!??

I heard a rumor that alltel will be offering an unlimited calling plan to their line up. This could be to pump up sales numbers before Verizon announces the merger on July 1.

Okay on the LG 8600, I just have 1 question. Can you take mp3s that you have saved on your memory card and use them as ringers (like you can in the razr and krazr)? I bought the wafer and I am going to return it because it does not let you do this and I am considering getting the 8600 instead but I want to make sure it does what I want! I have like 120 mp3 ringtones I have made and keep on my transflash card and I better be able to use them if I get this phone!

I just purchased 3 Alltel phones.Every time I call one of the numbers it says the same thing "the Alltel customer you are trying to reach is not available" then MESSAGE 47???? What does that mean? Is this phone disconnected? I called 2 weeks ago it was okay.HELP

I have had the Q for about a week now, and I have really enjoyed using it. Once you get past: only being able to text using two hands, horrible service, and not being able to hear someone when they are on the other end. Is anyone else having this problem? Every once and a while I will make a call or recieve a call, and i cannnot hear anyone on the other end. I will hang up and call right back, and they will ask why I couldn't hear them. Could this have anything to do with the phone switching back and fourth from EVDO and 1X?

I can upgrade my phone any time now with a contract renewal, but am waiting for alltel to come out with a phone I like. I was going to get the Q but you have to buy a data plan a month and change your whole contract around, and the cheapest I could get it for is $30, I really don't want to dish out that extra money.
The LG Flip (Not sure of the model number - often referred to as the "Flip Chocolate") is cool but a lot of peopl have it and I'm looking for something more sleek and that I can type on.

Can anyone tell me Alltels next "coolest" up to date phone that's going to come out? I don't want to get a phone that I don't really want so I'm holding off for Alltel to come out with a phone I really like....

Why does Alltel get all the verizon left overs.
The only phone we got before verizon is the Krazer. And verizon is beating alltel in the price. I wish Alltell would dish out some money and get some phones.
